Project background

Galian, an industry-leading independent insurance firm created by and for real estate professionals, is on a mission to win with data by optimizing internal processes and meeting regulatory- and security-related objectives. But in order to do so, Galian needed to overcome its challenges. Data fragmentation caused by data living in multiple systems and silos across the firm made it difficult to gain a holistic view of data. And sharing information about data assets with users was a challenge as well. Galian selected DataGalaxy to help them overcome these challenges, citing its straightforward implementation, ease of use for business users, and advantage price as its differentiators.

The Data Knowledge Catalog implementation process

To reach their goal of winning with data, Galian took an interactive approach to their implementation of DataGalaxy’s Data Knowledge Catalog. They began with a use case focused on S2 regulatory compliance which included mapping data and improving its quality to ensure it complied with regulatory standards. Using this start small and grow approach enabled Galian to begin a dialogue around data between the business and IT on ways in which they could enrich the data repository in support of regulatory compliance.

The two teams involved – one from the business and one from data architecture and governance – worked hand-in-hand throughout the implementation. Their iterative approach involved using collaborative workshops to select and validate the data set and then once confirmed, they moved on and applied their learnings to other data within the organization.

This approach, coupled with an investment in training, helped to drive greater adoption across the business. The most popular features among users are the ability to easily access information with just a few clicks and the ability to collaborate with others across the business. Users also cited DataGalaxy’s simple, intuitive user interface as key to driving adoption as the tool made accessing data easier than ever before.

Galian also found value in other DataGalaxy features including:

  • Powerful data import engine
  • Intuitive data visualization tools
  • Detailed data lineage and data transformation

Further, DataGalaxy’s Business Glossary helps to bridge the gap between the business and IT, enabling teams across Galian to “speak the same language,” share critical insights, and make better decisions. They can also use data lineage to understand and assess how the data has transformed over time, making it easier to spot the origin of the problem at hand.

DataGalaxy also puts data in the hands of the users, enabling them to find the data they need to answer their questions using the self-service search engine and natural language processing. Once they find the data, they can explore data definitions, lineage, and other essential business attributes that help them to better understand and leverage the data to drive informed decision-making.

As a result of implementing DataGalaxy, Galian has achieved improvements in data quality, a reduction in issue resolution time, and accelerated analysis and processing of data. Further, Galian credits the DataGalaxy team with playing a crucial role in delivering responsive technical support, strategic advice, and personalized training for users across the firm.

In the future, Galian plans to explore additional, advanced use cases including predictive analytics and risk management.
