The DataGalaxy solution has effectively reintroduced a common language. We’re starting to see a reduction in endless discussions on indicators and data, simply because people were coming to meetings with their own definitions of things.
Overview
Promod is a women’s ready-to-wear retailer, with around 420 stores in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg, and an online presence in a dozen countries.Project background
Promod recognized the strategic importance of data several years ago, identifying its essential role in business transformation.
The main challenges encountered included:
- Inconsistent data definitions: there was a noticeable loss of knowledge regarding KPIs, and their management rules were not respected. It was common to attend meetings where everyone presented their own figures with different definitions of KPIs.
- Need for a common language: the absence of a unified language for data within the company made it difficult to carry out accurate analyses and make decisions.
- Simplify the onboarding process: give new employees access to a corporate knowledge base with clear, accessible data definitions.
The Data Knowledge Catalog implementation process
Promod chose DataGalaxy for its simplicity and ease of implementation. The business teams quickly understood how to use the platform, and the value it could bring played an important role in the choice of DataGalaxy. The ease of use of the Chrome plug-in also played a role, as Promod intends to implement it in its stores.
To implement DataGalaxy, Promod began by overhauling its data visualization framework (dataviz), integrating data governance efforts alongside this project. This approach enabled continuous updates and improvements to the DataGalaxy catalog in collaboration with head office departments.
To involve the data teams, they selected a small group of data stewards to ensure consistency in KPI descriptions and business rule explanations. Throughout this process, DataGalaxy’s import/export features facilitated data integration.
Once these initial steps had been completed, the data team launched a communication campaign with the head office teams. This led to an increase in requests for further explanations and use of the tool. Since this announcement and initial use, the DataGalaxy tool has received positive feedback from business teams, indicating successful adoption. The next step in the implementation is to involve the 400+ Promod stores by installing the DataGalaxy Chrome plug-in, to enable easy access to data definitions.
