Maisons du Monde

Maisons du Monde uses DataGalaxy to advance its data governance strategy and give its employees access to reliable data for better decision-making.
The solution gives us an easier user experience. We now have a very user-friendly tool. That’s the first benefit for us, and one that has enabled all our business teams to adopt the solution.

Elodie Prodhomme - Chief Data Officer

Overview

Founded in 1996, Maisons du Monde is a retail, home furnishings and decoration company. It is currently present in nine countries with 357 stores.

Project background

Maisons du Monde got off to a pretty fast start on data with a new technical team and a Data Lake in 2018. They very quickly had a large volume of data around products, customer behavior and the supply chain. With such a large volume of data and indicators, they knew they needed a data governance strategy.

They developed a strategy with several objectives:

  • to speak a common language
  • make data available to business teams to facilitate decision-making
  • acculturate the whole company to the importance of data.

Strategic challenges

Having established the foundations of this data governance strategy, Maisons du Monde decided to take the next step and set up a data catalog.

They were looking for a tool that would enable them to put data at the heart of the company’s key processes:

  • structure and organize large volumes of data
  • train business teams using a simple, intuitive tool.
  • free up data teams’ time for more innovative work

The Data Knowledge Catalog implementation process

Maisons du Monde chose the DataGalaxy solution for four main reasons:

  • Accessibility of the DataGalaxy tool to business teams
  • The availability of a data glossary to achieve the common language objective
  • The ability to implement data lineage
  • Competitive pricing of the solution in a period of cost optimization

None of Maisons du Monde’s employees had any experience of implementing a tool like DataGalaxy. They therefore called on an integrator, Layer Data, who had already mastered the tool and all aspects of data governance, to help them with the technical aspects and documentation.

Having set up their data catalog on DataGalaxy, it was time to bring business users on board. The data team began by taking their needs into account. The main problem for business users was that they were often looking for a specific KPI, but didn’t know where to find it.

By taking into account the KPIs that the business teams needed to find, the Maisons du Monde data team was quickly able to solve this problem. Now, the business teams know which dashboard the KPIs are in, as well as the formula used, the definitions and the entire KPI data path. Thanks to this ease of use, business teams were quickly on board and understood how the tool worked.

They were also able to help their DPO with the RGPD aspect, with everything to do with register processing. They worked closely with her on this aspect, and proved to her that DataGalaxy could meet this need.

The benefits of DataGalaxy according to Maisons du Monde

  • The definition of indicators, and everything that makes it possible to achieve this common language objective, is one of the main reasons for the adoption of the solution by the business teams at Maisons du Monde.
  • The qualification and inventory of all processing carried out on customer data, facilitating the work of the DPO and the RGPD compliance of customer information.
  • Huge progress on the subject of data lineage, enabling all stages of data processing to be understood: from collection to transformation, presentation and feedback to business teams. Now, data teams have more time to deal with more innovative tasks, more focused on forecasting, prediction and prescription.
My teams regularly exchange ideas with the DataGalaxy teams. I get the impression that we’re in the process of co-constructing our future offering, exchanging and collaborating to help the solution evolve and address our future needs.
