Project background & strategic challenges
ESSEC’s data & artificial intelligence team knew the university needed a tool to help their data governance, data quality, and the use of artificial intelligence to improve the school’s operational performance.
The team wanted to:
- Centralize all the definitions and applications shared among business lines within a single entry point
- Decompartmentalize all the university’s internal applications, making them accessible to all teams to have an overall view and share a common language
ESSEC chose DataGalaxy because of its flexibility that could be adapted to any rising need.
Data catalog implementation process
ESSEC began implementing DataGalaxy by involving both their technical and business teams with the platform from the start. Together, the teams began populating the tool using their existing CSV files that contained definitions shared by the university’s various teams. They also integrated information from their existing applications and databases using DataGalaxy’s connectors.
Next, Stéphane’s team identified DataGalaxy data owners and data stewards to define responsibility within the platform, and they began setting up both the Business Glossary and Data Dictionary to define terms and create lineage among the various data points and applications.

Stéphane Urena
Director of Data and Artificial Intelligence
“We were particularly interested in DataGalaxy’s Business Glossary, as we needed to make a set of terms understandable to the school’s staff. The Data Dictionary is also an interesting feature, as it provides a lineage between different applications and databases, giving a complete view of the data lifecycle.”
